Understanding Your Sports Metrics

Running pace is one of the most fundamental metrics for any runner. Knowing your pace per kilometre (or mile) allows you to plan race strategy, set goals, and gauge progress over time. Consistency in training pace is a key marker of fitness improvement.

Calorie expenditure during exercise depends on multiple factors including body weight, exercise intensity (measured through MET values) and duration. Our calculator uses validated MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities to give you a reliable estimate.

Heart rate zones allow structured, purposeful training. Zone 2 training (aerobic base) is increasingly recognised by sports scientists as the foundation of endurance fitness, while Zones 4–5 develop speed and increase VO2 max. Understanding which zone you are in prevents overtraining and ensures productive sessions.

VO2 max — your maximal oxygen uptake — is widely considered the gold standard of cardiovascular fitness. Elite distance runners can exceed 80 ml/kg/min. Most recreational athletes fall between 35–55 ml/kg/min. Improving it over months of consistent training is one of the best indicators of long-term health.

Hydration is frequently underestimated. Even mild dehydration (1–2% of body weight) can reduce performance by 10–20%. Fluid needs vary significantly with sweat rate, temperature and exercise intensity — our calculator provides a personalised starting point.
